Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike is likely to be docked two weeks’ wages for his sending-off against Southampton in the third round of the League Cup on Tuesday, according to the Daily Mail.

The Reds secured a 2-1 victory over the Saints at Anfield, with the Frenchman grabbing the winner in the 85th minute as the hosts continued their habit of leaving it late to win matches.

However, Ekitike angered Liverpool manager Arne Slot after he was sent off for removing his shirt to celebrate.

The summer signing had been booked earlier in the second half for dissent after punching the ball away when referee Thomas Bramall awarded a free-kick against him.

Ekitike will now miss the trip to Crystal Palace when Premier League action resumes on Saturday.

Liverpool vice-captain Andy Robertson made his feelings clear after the game, and Ekitike has since taken to social media to apologise for the incident.

Alexander Isak will be expected to start the game at Selhurst Park, and Slot will have to look elsewhere if he opts to take him off during the closing stages of the match.

It takes discipline to play for a club of such calibre, and the Frenchman has learnt an important lesson.

Ekitike is battling with Isak for a spot in the Liverpool starting XI, and getting needlessly sent off is not in his best interests.
