Hugo Lloris (37) has revealed exclusive extracts of his upcoming biography Earning My Spurs to The Guardian. The former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper from 2012 to 2023 notably reveals how a gift from club chairman Daniel Levy made him realize the North London club was not primed for success in the 2019 Champions League final against Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

Lloris adds that, four days before the final against the Reds in Madrid’s Civitas Metropolitano, the Tottenham Hotspur players each received a luxury aviator watch. The timepieces were engraved with the player’s name alongside the following: “Champions League Finalist 2019.” “Finalist.” Who does such a thing at a moment like this?”, asks Lloris. The Tottenham Hotspurs goalkeeper believes that had they won, Levy would not have asked for the watches back to have “Winner” engraved instead. “I have considerable respect and esteem for the man and all he has done for the club as chairman – I got to know him – but there are things he is simply not sensitive to“, Lloris underlines, adding he has never worn this watch to this day.

Tottenham eventually lost to Liverpool 2-0, with Mohamed Salah scoring from the penalty spot in the first minutes and Divock Origi doubling the Reds’ advantage in the 86th minute. “With an engraving like that, Levy couldn’t have been surprised if we had been 1–0 down after a couple of minutes: so it was written,” Lloris writes.
