Corinthians captain Rodrigo Garro has backed goalkeeper Hugo Souza to make Brazil’s 2026 World Cup squad, with Carlo Ancelotti set to reveal his 26 at 17:00 on Monday.

According to Meu Timao, Garro spoke after Sunday’s defeat to Botafogo, stressing the keeper’s importance to the team and saying he hopes the call comes.

Garro described Souza as outstanding, noting his positive influence in the dressing room and saying the group are willing the selection to happen.

Souza is on Brazil’s 55-man provisional list and is one of six goalkeepers, alongside Alisson Becker of Liverpool, Bento of Al-Nassr, Ederson of Fenerbahçe, Jhon of Nottingham Forest and Weverton of Grêmio, a pool compiled by Ancelotti with goalkeeping coach Claudio Taffarel.

Ge.globo reports that Brazil are likely to take three goalkeepers, with Alisson and Ederson near certainties, and that Souza is in contention with Bento and possibly Weverton for the final place. The squad will assemble on 27 May at Granja Comary.

Since Ancelotti took charge, Souza has appeared on all five of his lists, though in March he was only called after Alisson withdrew. He has started once, a 3-2 defeat to Japan on 14 October, and missed the November 2025 squad due to a left thigh muscle injury.

Even if he misses the final cut, FIFA rules allow a goalkeeper from the provisional list to replace an injured or ill squad member at any point during the tournament.
