Hugo Souza shines in shootout, beats Cássio’s record at Corinthians debut

Last Wednesday, Corinthians' qualification over Athletico-PR in the Copa do Brasil had a protagonist: Hugo Souza. The goalkeeper defended another penalty kick and reached the impressive mark of eight saves in 25 penalty kicks faced since he joined the club. The performance is noteworthy: a 32% success rate, a number higher than what Cássio, the greatest penalty saver in the history of Timão, recorded at the same point in his career.

Cássio, who defended the Corinthians goal between 2012 and 2024, only faced his 25th penalty kick in 2016, in his fifth season at the club. That year, he had defended six penalties and saw two go out, out of a total of 31 penalties suffered. His eighth save came only in 2017, after 42 penalty kicks - which represents a success rate of 19.06% until then.

Despite the slower start, 2017 was a remarkable year for Cássio in terms of penalties. He defended four penalty kicks and saw another four wasted by opponents. Although Corinthians was eliminated from the Copa do Brasil, the goalkeeper played an important role in the victorious campaigns of the Paulistão and Brasileirão that year, with highlights for the saves against Grêmio, away from home, and Ponte Preta.

Throughout his journey at Parque São Jorge, Cássio made 32 penalty saves, a club record. He left Corinthians in 2024 as the greatest penalty saver in the history of the black and white team. On the list of the greatest, he is followed by Ronaldo Giovanelli, with 24 saves (according to data from historian Celso Unzelte, in the Almanaque do Timão), and Gylmar dos Santos Neves, who played in the 1950s and defended 11 penalties.

Hugo Souza, with only one year at the club, currently ranks fourth in this ranking, with eight saves. The goalkeeper has already left historical names behind, like Dida, and has accumulated great moments with the black and white shirt.

Among the penalties defended are: One against Grêmio, in the Copa do Brasil 2024; Three consecutive saves against Red Bull Bragantino, in the Sul-Americana 2024 (hat-trick); Two saves against Palmeiras, in the Paulistão 2025; One against Novorizontino; And the most recent, against Athletico-PR, in the Copa do Brasil 2025.
