Hugo Souza targets Libertadores glory with Corinthians, eyes big impact

Goalkeeper Hugo Souza stated that Corinthians winning the Copa Libertadores would have repercussions throughout the country. In an exclusive interview with TV Gazeta, the player highlighted the size of the club and projected the impact of a potential continental title while wearing the black and white shirt.

“After the Supercopa title, I was talking to Yuri [Alberto] on the plane and I said: ‘Imagine if we win a Libertadores here, the madness it would be.’ We would stop São Paulo, the whole of Brazil,” said Hugo.

Hugo Souza arrived at Corinthians in July 2024, during a period of instability for the team, which at the time was fighting against relegation in the Brazilian Championship. Since then, the scenario has changed. The club avoided relegation and won three titles in about a year and a half: the 2025 Paulista Championship and Copa do Brasil, as well as the 2026 Supercopa do Brasil.

Commenting on the current moment experienced by the squad, the number 1 emphasized the unity of the group and the desire to leave his name marked in the club’s history.

“I arrived at a time when the club was discredited, everyone thought we were going to be relegated. A year and a half later, we have three titles that show the weight of this shirt and how much this squad came together to make things work,” said the goalkeeper.

“When I arrived, I said that my desire was to make history. It was a club that embraced me as soon as I arrived. The only way I can give back is by giving my best on the field,” he added.

The goalkeeper’s performances have also attracted interest from foreign clubs. At the end of 2025, Corinthians rejected an offer from Milan, Italy, for the player. Despite European interest, Hugo reinforced his desire to stay at the club and continue chasing titles, alongside other players being monitored by the international market.

“We have a contract here, we really want to keep winning to put Corinthians at the level it deserves. This club truly deserves to experience titles,” he said.

Finally, in addition to his goals at the club, Hugo Souza revealed that his main personal goal is to play in the 2026 World Cup. A regular presence in recent call-ups for the Brazilian National Team, the goalkeeper spoke about his dream of playing in the World Cup and the expectation of remaining on coach Carlo Ancelotti’s radar, who watched the Supercopa final last Sunday (01).

“I will work very hard every day so that I am there. It is the biggest dream of my life, my great goal. My routine is focused on that, something that was very distant a year and a half ago, now is so close to me. I hope he [Ancelotti] liked what he saw last Sunday,” he concluded.
