Jamie Carragher explains why he doesn’t agree with at least two Manchester United summer buys, especially when more suitable options were available.
The Red Devils primarily focused on revamping their attack this summer. They bought three new forwards in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, while offloading Marcus Rashford, Antony, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund.
Nevertheless, INEOS eventually addressed the goalkeeping department by signing Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.
Lammens’ arrival was met by a collective sigh of relief from Man Utd supporters who have been crying out for a reliable shot-stopper over the past two seasons, as Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir have both been error-prone.
At the age of 23, the custodian is considered an exciting up-and-comer who is ready to explode on the big stage following a solid campaign in the Belgian top-flight.

However, Carragher doesn’t necessarily share the United fanbase’s enchantment, as he had expected INEOS to go after a more proven profile like Emiliano Martinez.
“I was expecting Emi Martinez to come in yesterday for Manchester United, just on the back of Unai Emery’s interview before the game against Crystal Palace on Sunday night,” said the Liverpool legend via Metro. “So I am surprised that hasn’t happened.
“The Belgian lad [Lammens] is obviously a young goalkeeper with great potential and it just remains to be seen how long it will be before he goes into the team. I would imagine that would be pretty quickly given the form of the other two goalkeepers at Manchester United.”
Carragher believes that Lammens might struggle to withold the great pressure placed on the shoulders of any Man United goalkeeper, as he suggests that the Belgian is too young and inexperienced for the role, and the same applies to his teammates Benjamin Sesko, who is now tasked with spearheading the team’s charge.
“He’s a young goalkeeper and, like we said when Manchester United brought in a young striker in Benjamin Sesko at the other end of the pitch, they will need time, that’s just the nature of the beast, certainly as a goalkeeper as well.
“I think the thing with the manager now is how quickly he puts this young lad in and I would imagine it would be pretty quickly.”
Sesko has already made three appearances off the bench in the Premier League, while his only starting appearance for Man Utd ensued in the horrific Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town. The young striker has yet to register a direct goal contribution
