Erling Haaland has insisted that he failed to do his job during Wednesday night’s 2-2 draw away to AS Monaco in UEFA Champions League action.
Haaland scored twice in the first-half for Pep Guardiola’s men on the French Riviera as Manchester City entered the interval against AS Monaco with a 2-1 lead, which they gave away at the death courtesy of Eric Dier’s controversial injury-time penalty goal.
The 25-year-old opened the scoring at the Stade Louis II with a delicate dink over AS Monaco goalkeeper Philipp Köhn after being played in by Josko Gvardiol, taking his tally to 10 goals for the 2025-26 season.
Adolf Hütter’s men equalised not long after Haaland’s 15th-minute opener as Jordan Teze beat Gianluigi Donnarumma from distance with a stunning strike in the top left corner of the Manchester City deadline day signing’s net.
However, Haaland restored Manchester City’s lead with a perfectly-placed header past Köhn right on the cusp of half-time, with the Norway international rising highest to cushion Nico O’Reilly’s cross into the bottom left corner.
City dominated possession throughout the game in Monaco but failed to put the UEFA Champions League group-stage tie to bed as Phil Foden and Tijjani Reijnders came close to scoring but were derailed by the crossbar either side of half-time.
Monaco won a late penalty after a VAR check deemed that Nico Gonzalez had fouled Eric Dier in the penalty area despite cameras clearly revealing that the Manchester City midfielder was first to the ball.
Dier converted the resulting penalty past Donnarumma as Manchester City and Haaland return to England with a point, despite having led for majority of the game and squandering a host of presentable chances to see off Hütter and co.
Having blasted his side’s lacklustre second-half display in his post-match media commitments, Haaland held himself equally culpable for the result in Monaco despite having scored twice in the first-half.
“I still think I’m involved in the game by doing movements and creating space for others. So it’s not only if you’re having touches that you’re involved in the game or not,” the Leeds-born forward said in an interview with TNT Sports.
“I think you can be involved many other ways, and that’s my job; I did my job in the first-half, second-half I didn’t. I didn’t score, I didn’t finish the game, so no (I didn’t do my job in the second-half).”
Haaland increased his goalscoring tally to 11 for the 2025-26 season with his first-half brace in Monaco on Wednesday and the 25-year-old will be desperate to spearhead Manchester City to winning ways against Brentford in the Premier League on Sunday.
