Eveliina Summanen’s first thought might have been ‘why did I even shoot?’ but it turned out to be one of the best strikes seen so far this season to help us edge out Aston Villa in the Women’s League Cup.
As the clock struck the hour mark at Brisbane Road, with either side failing to break the deadlock, the Finland international received the ball from Jess Naz just inside our half and just had one thought.
Steadying herself from around 40 yards out, she unleashed a phenomenal strike into the top right corner, crashing off the underside of the crossbar, for one of the best strikes this season.
Although it was a nervy final few moments as Villa searched for an equaliser, Eveliina’s remarkable finish was enough to make it two wins out of two in the competition, putting us within touching distance of securing our spot in the knockout stages.
That goal also took the midfielder’s tally to three goals in all competitions so far this campaign – already surpassing last season’s total – and is the Club’s leading goalscorer.
Reflecting on her third goal of the campaign, she said: “To be honest, I didn’t expect it to go in.
“My first thought was ‘why did I even shoot?’ but it was a lucky shot and it went in, we had other opportunities to score as well.
“It’s nice to return to winning ways, keep a clean sheet, so it’s definitely good for us and, now, it’s nice to go into the international break.”
