As speculation continues to stir surrounding Danny Röhl’s Sheffield Wednesday future, attention has turned to whether or not the German coach will attempt to bring breakout Owls star Djeidi Gassama with him to a new club.

The Wednesday boss has been subject to rumours linking him with jobs at Southampton, Leicester City, and RB Leipzig amidst an impressive 18 months in charge of the South Yorkshire side.

Young French winger Djeidi Gassama has been an integral part of Röhl’s side. Initially a rough diamond signed under Xisco Munoz’s Owls tenure, the wide man has developed exponentially under Röhl’s watchful eye, prompting concern amongst Wednesday supporters that Gassama will follow the manager out of the door in the summer.

Danny Röhl exit won’t trigger Djeidi Gassama departure, says Owls fan pundit

Football League World spoke with resident Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit Patrick McKenna, on if he had fears that Danny Röhl would bring Gassama with him to his next club.

“In regards to Danny Röhl and Gassama, wherever Danny Röhl goes, he will not take Gassama.” McKenna told FLW.

“The only reason for that is not that Gassama isn’t good enough, but I think Danny Röhl is very proud of what he has achieved at Sheffield Wednesday and what he is building.

“Obviously players like Gassama are key to that strategy, so I don’t think he’d want to see that ripped up. He wouldn't want to take away a key player from Sheffield Wednesday, but it might be a case of me being naive.

“I don’t think Danny Röhl will seek to take players with him. It’s certainly not a case of he wouldn’t be good enough for any of the teams - Southampton, Leicester, Leipzig - Gassama has shown this season real progression, and he’s shown that he’s a real live wire and he could replicate that at a stronger side.

“A team like Southampton, if they had him next season, he could be key because I think as a player he’s only going to get better and better, and the number of goals and assists are only going to increase. Look at his goal against Blackburn during the week - it’s an excellent goal, and it’s something he’ll continue to have in his game.”

Asked if Owls chairman Dejphon Chansiri would stall any bids for the young winger, McKenna added: “Regarding Chansiri, digging in on this, I actually know quite the opposite under his reign - that we never really make a profit on players. Lucas Joao, now quite a few years ago, is the only player I can think of for a profit.

“We’ve got a habit of letting players' contracts run down and then they go for no money, or on the cheap, so my actual concern would be that, in time, we don’t tie Gassama down to a contract and we lose him for free.

“Hopefully, when Gassama does go, he is within contract and we do get a big fee - but historically this is not an area where we have taken advantage of the talent we’ve possessed at certain times.

“I don’t think Chansiri will dig his heels in - but you know me, I hope he’s not about much longer, and when Gassama does leave, we have a competent chairman in charge.”

Sheffield Wednesday must learn from past mistakes, and secure Djeidi Gassama’s future

Whether Gassama is ready or not for a leap to the Bundesliga or top of the Championship, his raw talent and rapid development under Danny Röhl will undoubtedly attract interest this summer.

For Wednesday fans, the fear isn’t just that he could leave - it’s that he could leave for nothing.

With his current deal running only until 2026, the club must act decisively to secure his long-term future and avoid a repeat of past contract missteps.

A new, extended deal would not only reflect Gassama’s growing importance to the team but also protect the club’s ability to demand a fee should he move on.
