Chelsea insider Matt Law has warned Enzo Maresca he’s playing a dangerous game if he’s trying to send a message to the board by constantly chopping and changing centre backs.
The Blues lost Levi Colwill to an ACL injury before the start of the season, but despite public pleas from Maresca a new centre back wasn’t signed.
Chelsea tried to sign Dean Huijsen but he opted to join Real Madrid, whilst there were links with Marc Guehi, which didn’t materialise either.
Chelsea have been plagued by injury issues at centre back at the start of the season, highlighted by the fact they finished the win against Liverpool with Reece James and Jorrel Hato as their pairing.
Maresca has struggled to settle on a first choice pairing, with Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah, Josh Acheampong, Benoit Badiashile and Tosin all getting game time in various partnerships.

Quite why Maresca has opted to rotate so much in a key area could be down to a number of reasons, but Law has warned the Italian he’s playing a dangerous game if he’s trying to send a message to the board.
“I don’t know whether Maresca’s trying to send a message to the board through the constant chopping and changing (of CBs),” he told The London Is Blue Podcast
“If he is, I don’t think that’s clever. Chelsea have the worst defensive record in the top six of the Premier League with 11 conceded.”
Despite all the chopping and changing this season, Maresca has fielded Chalobah and Fofana as his pairing in the last two league games.

It appears to be a good pairing, but whether Maresca sticks with it moving forward remains to be seen, especially with Fofana currently only ready to play once a week.
Perhaps Maresca will use the duo as his league pairing, and play a different partnership in cup competitions, but continuity at the back is key.
