As mentioned elsewhere on this site, it is a peculiarity of Liverpool supporters that more songs by The Beatles aren’t used when it comes to the songs and chants that get sung by the Kop in honour of former players and managers.

There is an extent to which there may well be a reluctance to turn to the greatest band ever to record a song as inspiration for a football chant, whilst the likes of ABBA and other bands are turned to on a semi-regular basis. Instead, the feeling might well be that it is only the real greats that deserve a Beatles song sung in their honour, which is why one was used for Jürgen Klopp.

Legends Honouring a Legend

It is virtually impossible to separate the city of Liverpool from The Beatles. Whether it be the statue of the four of them that stands near the waterfront or the fact that almost every non-brand-based shop will have some form of Beatles-themed tat for sale to those coming from outside, The Beatles are everywhere. In spite of this, there aren’t a huge number of songs sung on the terrace of Anfield that are based around numbers from the Fab Four, which is what makes those that are stand out from the crowd. If you wanted to pick a person deserving of having a Beatles song reworded in their honour, Jürgen Klopp is surely your man.

The German arrived at Anfield when it felt as though the club was at its lowest ebb in a footballing sense, having barely recovered from the ownership of George Gillett and Tom Hicks and the management of Roy Hodgson. We came close under Brendan Rodgers only to fall short, so the fact that Klopp was able to restore us to the pinnacle of football in both Europe and domestically means that he will forever be loved and remembered by those of us lucky enough to be there to witness it. The song that was written in his honour not only shows him love, but acknowledges that he achieved at Anfield exactly what he said he would.
