England midfielder Declan Rice played a key role as England claimed a 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opening Group L game last night.
Rice bagged an assist after delivering a corner-kick that Harry Kane converted with precision.
The Arsenal star recorded 52 touches, played four key passes, won two out of four duels, recovered the ball four times and made two progressive carries.
However, England boss Thomas Tuchel brought off the 27-year-old in the 72nd minute as he looked uncomfortable.
Fans will be worried about Rice’s fitness as he has endured a gruelling campaign with the Gunners.
Tuchel allayed fears that Rice had picked up a knock before the Three Lions’ games against Ghana and Panama.
The German tactician said (via journalist Henry Winter): “I didn’t want to take any risks. It was a moment to protect him. I hope it’s nothing more.
“Declan reassured me at the end, it’s good. It’s nothing big to worry about.”
England cannot afford for Rice to pick up an injury. He is key to their chances of winning this World Cup.
When he is on the pitch, England look more controlled, aggressive and secure in transition.
If this discomfort lingers, Tuchel will be forced to rethink the midfield set-up. His absence would be a major blow to England’s tournament rhythm.
England cannot replace his presence in full flow, and their World Cup hopes may well hinge on his availability.
