Liverpool briefly made Florian Wirtz the most expensive player in British football history last summer.

The Reds paid Bayer Leverkusen a fee that could reach £116m for the playmaker - who starred for Xabi Alonso’s side in their unbeaten German league and cup double in 2024.

Much was expected from Germany international Wirtz - who arrived at Anfield with a reputation as one of the world’s finest creative attackers.

But it’s fair to say his opening months on Merseyside have been a struggle.

Wirtz bounces back versus Frankfurt

Wirtz has been in and out of the starting XI in recent weeks as Arne Slot shuffles his pack.

And of course the 22-year-old was unable to register a single goal or assist across his first 11 matches for the club in Premier League or Champions League action.

All that was put to bed in midweek however when Wirtz put together his most complete Liverpool performance to date. Liverpool beat Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 at the Waldstadion with Wirtz taking centre stage.

The £116m man made two assists - one for Cody Gakpo and another for Dominik Szoboszlai - to help slay his former Bundesliga rivals.

There is more to come admits Wirtz

Liverpool fans have been waiting a long time for a goal contribution from their new star - and he will have been relieved to get off the mark.

After the game he admitted to German television that his totals have been nowhere near where he’d like them to be - but also reminded audiences that his quality was never in question.

"It's no secret that I would have liked to have been involved in more goals,” he told ZDF via Die Welt.

“But I'm probably the best judge of my games; I'm honest with myself. It wasn't always as bad as people say.”
