Ian Poveda has been banned from driving for six months after admitting speeding at 100mph in a 70mph zone.

The 26-year-old, then a Sunderland player, was stopped on the A184 in South Tyneside at about 8.45am on Sunday 23 February 2025 after a police officer saw his black Range Rover accelerating, according to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk.

The officer signalled for him to pull over and Poveda complied immediately.

He did not attend the hearing at North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court. Prosecutors told the court the vehicle had been travelling well above the limit, while his lawyer said the speeding lasted only a very short time.

The court heard Poveda already had nine penalty points on his licence from three previous speeding offences. Magistrates imposed a further six and disqualified him under the totting up procedure.

He was fined £800, with a £320 surcharge and £600 in costs. Poveda previously played for Leeds United in the Premier League, making 25 appearances across four seasons.
