With domestic football on pause due to the international break attention momentarily shifts to what may lie ahead in the future. On that front, it does appear that Manchester City may be set to rebuild their midfield next summer. Players such as Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, Mateo Kovacic and Bernardo Silva are all nearing the end of their illustrious careers. While it will be sad to see such important players move on or take on smaller roles that is just part of football.

There is no denying that Manchester City will need to rebuild their midfield shortly. It appears to be the major priority heading into next summer’s transfer window. Who the champions target to replace club legends will be fascinating to see unfold. But a new report indicates that one of the most sought-after midfielders in the game may be off the table for Manchester City.

SkySports Germany has reported that Florian Wirtz appears set to remain in Germany for the foreseeable future. Furthermore, SkySports Germany adds that Bayern Munich are considered the front-runner to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s star midfielder.

As a player, Florian Wirtz could have been the ideal addition to City’s midfield. The German international is one of the premier playmakers in the game. He has started for Bayer Leverkusen in recent seasons. Wirtz is also one of Germany’s best players on the international stage. If Kevin De Bruyne was to depart Manchester City next summer Wirtz could have been the ideal player to replace him. But it now seems that he is more likely to remain in the Bundesliga.

If Wirtz is off the table it will be interesting to see who Manchester City target next. That could be the £100 million question heading into next summer.
