Nicolas Jackson has issued an apology on Instagram after being sent off against Flamengo in the Club World Cup on Friday.

The 24-year-old came on as second half substitute after Liam Delap was handed his first start for the club, but things couldn’t have gone any worse for him on his birthday.

After just four minutes on the pitch Jackson was sent off for a dreadful tackle and once again left his team-mates in the lurch as they slipped to a 3-1 defeat against their Brazilian counterparts.

Nicolas Jackson issues apology

It’s not the first time Jackson has let his team-mates down and he was sent off towards the end of last season against Newcastle, making it two red cards in his last five games.

Jackson will miss the final game against ES Tunis and has handed Delap a huge opportunity to stake a claim to be the number one striker going into next season.

Marc Cucurella revealed Jackson had apologised to his team-mates at full time, and he’s now taken to Instagram to issue a lengthy apology.

“I want to say sorry. To the club, the staff, my teammates, and all the fans watching, I let you down. Another red card, and honestly, I’m so angry at myself,” he wrote.

“I work hard every day to help the team not to put us in this kind of situation. I still don’t fully understand how it happened.

“But one thing is clear: it wasn’t intentional. Just a football moment that went the wrong way. “No excuses. I take full responsibility.

“I’ll reflect, I’ll grow, and I’ll come back stronger for the badge and for everyone who believes in me. Sorry. Sorry.”

Huge opportunity for Delap

Jackson’s red has handed Delap an opportunity to impress and the 22-year-old will now have a clear run in the side having shown positive signs in both games so far.

Delap now has a chance to put a marker down and score his first goals for the club in the early hours of Wednesday morning UK time.

Marc Guiu came on as a late substitute, but he’s unlikely to get minutes ahead of Delap, who is in line to start to the opening game of the season, with Jackson also suspended for that one.
