Spain’s World Cup celebration featured an unusual scene as FIFA president Gianni Infantino asked US president Donald Trump to move away from the centre of the stage so the players could take the spotlight before the trophy lift.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, Trump had been standing beside the trophy during the ceremony and hesitated for a few moments before stepping aside, doing so after the Swiss official signalled that he should move.

The gesture, captured by television cameras, spread rapidly on social media and briefly overshadowed the champions’ big moment.

Once Trump moved away, Spain raised the cup and marked their achievement with the customary image, the players alone occupying centre stage.

For Luis de la Fuente’s side, it was the moment that crowns four years of work and confirms them as world champions.
