Iñigo Pérez has moved quickly to shape Villarreal’s new era, setting priorities and signing off the club’s pre-season plan as he begins his tenure. The work comes with LaLiga, the Champions League and the Copa del Rey on the horizon.
Presented on Tuesday on a three-year deal, the Navarrese coach has dedicated his opening week to understanding the club, its facilities and day-to-day staff. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, he has already spent two days at the Ciudad Deportiva José Manuel Llaneza to familiarise himself with the working environment and meet personnel.
A key focus has been direct talks with the hierarchy. Pérez has met chief executive Fernando Roig Negueroles and the sporting department to start decisions for next season, covering squad planning, returning loanees, market needs and pre-season organisation. He wants a clear picture of the group he will lead from July.
With Champions League football returning, Villarreal expect a more demanding calendar and are intent on reaching pre-season with a defined roadmap. The first major step is in place, including dates and the proposed friendly schedule, with medical and fitness testing scheduled to start on six July and full training from nine July under Pérez.
He will remain in Vila-real until Sunday, and is also set to sample the LaLiga Futures Pamesa tournament at the Ciudad Deportiva Pamesa, a chance to gauge the academy. Pérez will then head on holiday before reporting back for the start of pre-season, launching an ambitious project with the Champions League as the showcase.
