Slot’s Liverpool Exit Exposed by Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Nunez Tensions

Liverpool’s decision to part company with Arne Slot has inevitably prompted fresh scrutiny of what went wrong during his brief spell at Anfield. Results played a major role in the Dutchman’s departure, but according to reporting from the Liverpool Echo, relationships inside the dressing room also became increasingly strained as his second season unravelled.

Having delivered a Premier League title in his first campaign, Slot entered the following season with considerable goodwill. Yet football’s margins are unforgiving, and as performances declined, frustrations among several high-profile players became increasingly public.

Salah Fallout Revealed Growing Fractures

Few stories generated more attention than Slot’s deteriorating relationship with Mohamed Salah.

The Egyptian forward stunned supporters after being left out of Liverpool’s starting line-up on three consecutive occasions during December 2025. Following an away fixture against Leeds United, Salah openly questioned both the decision-making and his relationship with the manager.

“I can’t believe I’m sitting on the bench for 90 minutes,” Salah said.

“The third time on the bench, I think for the first time in my career. I’m very, very disappointed.”

The Liverpool forward went further, suggesting he had become a convenient target during a difficult run of results.

“It seems like the club has thrown me under the bus.”

Perhaps the most striking remark came when Salah addressed his relationship with Slot directly.

“I said many times before that I had a good relationship with the manager and all of a sudden, we don’t have any relationship.”

Those comments offered a rare public glimpse into tensions behind the scenes at Liverpool and raised serious questions about communication between manager and player.

Months later, Salah again appeared frustrated, calling for Liverpool to rediscover the aggressive attacking identity that had previously made them feared across Europe.

Trent Alexander-Arnold Disagreements Offered Early Warning

While Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure to Real Madrid was ultimately unrelated to any dispute with Slot, their interactions provided an early indication of the manager’s willingness to challenge established stars.

During Liverpool’s victory over Brentford in the opening months of Slot’s reign, Alexander-Arnold reacted visibly after being substituted. It was not the first occasion he had expressed frustration after being withdrawn from a match.

Slot, however, remained unmoved.

“He didn’t look that happy after being taken off? I can understand that,” the Liverpool head coach explained.

“Every player wants to play 90 minutes.”

Rather than backing down, Slot defended the decision and stressed the importance of managing workloads across a demanding season.

His response reflected a coach determined to establish authority, even when dealing with one of Liverpool’s most influential academy graduates.

Nunez Criticism Highlighted Manager’s Demands

Darwin Nunez also found himself under the spotlight during Slot’s tenure.

Following a frustrating performance against Aston Villa, the Uruguayan striker came under unusually direct criticism from his manager. While Slot accepted missed opportunities, he made clear that a decline in effort levels would not be tolerated.

“I can accept misses but what is harder for me to accept is his behaviour after the chance,” Slot said.

“He was not the usual Darwin who works his a** off and makes sure he helps the team.”

The Liverpool boss added another pointed assessment.

“You can miss a chance but you cannot miss out on work rate.”

Nunez responded through social media, initially posting a message expressing frustration at how quickly opinions can change in football before later clarifying his stance.

“I wasn’t the best three weeks ago, nor am I the worst now.”

Despite his determination to fight for his place, the striker’s Liverpool career eventually came to an end when he joined Al-Hilal in August 2025.

Iraola Faces Fresh Challenge at Liverpool

With Slot now gone and Andoni Iraola installed as Liverpool’s new head coach, attention turns towards rebuilding both performances and relationships.

Managing elite footballers has always required a balance between authority and trust. Slot’s willingness to confront difficult situations demonstrated strong principles, but the public disagreements involving Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Nunez inevitably became part of the wider story surrounding his downfall.

According to the Liverpool Echo’s reporting, repairing connections inside the dressing room and restoring unity among supporters will be among Iraola’s most pressing priorities.

Liverpool remain one of football’s most demanding environments. Winning matches is essential, but maintaining harmony between manager and players often proves just as important. Slot discovered that reality during a turbulent second season that ultimately ended with his departure from Anfield.
