Following their MLS Cup win, Inter Miami made some notable roster moves. With the complete signing of Sergio Reguilon and the MLS Super draft picks already in, the Herons must start to search for players to reinforce their midfield.
Sergio Busquets’ departure leaves a massive hole in the number five position. Based on common sense, Javier Mascherano would put Yannick Bright to cover the spot left by the Spanish legend. However, the problem remains the same.
You move Bright as a pivot, De Paul on the right side, and you are still missing a player who could cover and patrol the left side. With the recent rumours, Inter Miami dodged a bullet by not signing a Uruguayan midfielder.
According to Argentine journalist César Luis Merlo, Fonseca won’t arrive at Miami this transfer window because Miami couldn’t match the offer asked from Club Leon. Despite the need to fill up the midfield position, the Herons really dodged a bullet with this one.
With experience in Italy, Uruguay, Argentina, and Mexico, Fonseca was unable to establish himself as a starting player.
Across all his teams, the Uruguayan rotated between starting roles and coming off the bench due to multiple inconsistencies in his game. His last stage was at River Plate, where he was champion of the Argentinian Supercup.
Despite winning a title, the midfielder did not have an easy time at River Plate. If you ask any River fan about Nico, the first thing they’ll tell you is that his game is limited. At times, he seems to show flashes of being a match-changing player, but the reality is that he is far from that.
Fonseca has a decent short pass and can find space to position himself to receive passes in between the lines, but that’s it.
He is the type of player who gets stuck high up the pitch in attack and struggles to switch gears and drop back defensively. That should not be what Mascherano is looking for. The Herons need someone like Busquets, a player who can build play from the back or control the game when the ball is at his feet.
Otherwise, if Bright is moved out of position, Miami will need someone capable of covering ground and doing the dirty work that the player has been doing.
From every aspect, Inter Miami is a lucky Club Leon rejected their offer. Now, they can go and look for a more promising and interesting player.
