Inter Milan headed into the international break on a three-game winless league run, compromising their Scudetto chances.

Furthermore, Cristian Chivu’s side failed to score more than one goal in each of those three matches.

However, Lautaro Martinez cured Inter’s scoring problems in his first Serie A start since mid-February.

Indeed, the 28-year-old striker needed less than 60 seconds into his return to action to break the deadlock at San Siro.

Then, he sealed Roma’s fate at the start of the second half, pouncing on a perfect assist from Marcus Thuram.

Meanwhile, the Frenchman finally ended his five-game Serie A drought with a towering header to make it 4-1.

As a result of Inter’s emphatic performance, they are now nine points clear of second-placed AC Milan, who will face Napoli tomorrow.

“Today was a direct clash, an important match for the league, for the standings, and for ourselves,” Lautaro said. “We had to step onto the field with the right personality; Roma is strong, we know their coach, and they disrupt plays well.

“Then today, Marcus came back, or rather, he made the difference. Everyone can have a dip in form, I do too; I’m happy for him and all my teammates – this was the victory we deserved.”

He then stood up for Alessandro Bastoni and his teammates.

“When you talk about him and all my teammates, it gives me goosebumps,” Lautaro added. “These guys give their all, I’m saying this today when we’re happy, but even when we lose, they leave everything on the pitch.

“Even now, when they’re left out of the World Cup, they set an example and work giving their maximum. Everyone can have a dip in form, but for years we’ve kept Inter at the top.

“We can’t stop, we accept criticism, but we want to train every day to keep Inter high. I’m happy to have these teammates.”
