Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi feels that “past derbies count for nothing” in tomorrow’s Serie A clash with AC Milan.

The Nerazzurri coach insisted that he is not going to be complacent in a press conference ahead of tomorrow’s match, as reported by FCInterNews.

The Milan derby has been a fixture that’s only gone one way in the last couple of years.

Inter have beaten city rivals Milan on six consecutive occasions. These matches have come in Serie A, the Supercoppa Italiana, and the Champions League.

Last season, Inter made history by clinching the Serie A title with a Milan derby victory – the first time either they or Milan had done so.

The most recent Rossoneri win dates back to September of 2022.

Moreover, Inter have been in better form than their city rivals to start this season off.

The Nerazzurri secured an impressive draw against Manchester City in their Champions League opener in midweek. The Rossoneri, on the other hand, were beaten 3-1 by Liverpool.

Nevertheless, the derby is never a match where the form book tells the whole story.

That is a big part of the reason why clashes between the two city rivals are always among the showpiece occasions of Italian football.

Inter Coach Inzaghi: “Past Derbies Count For Nothing” Vs AC Milan

Inter coach Inzaghi commented that “We know what the derby represents for our fans.”

“We’ll need a special Inter performance,” he continued.

“Particularly after a match like the one we had against City, where we spent a lot of energy.”

“But in matches like the derby, you find energy that you didn’t even know you had,” Inzaghi insisted.

As far as going for seven derby wins in a row, Inzaghi made clear that “What happened is in the past, it counts for nothing.”

“They have top players,” the Inter coach said of Milan.

“And a great coach, who I already came up against when we were at Lazio and Roma.”

“We have to be ready. We need to show out organization and our quality,” Inzaghi said.

Meanwhile, Inzaghi said that as far as his selection decisions tomorrow, “I still have doubts.”

“I’ve yet to see today’s training session,” Inzaghi noted. “The players who played in Manchester trained less yesterday.”

As far as the form of captain Lautaro Martinez, still without a goal or assist this season, Inzaghi said that “He played for a year without stopping and came back earlier than expected.”

“He came back to be ready. He’s putting in a lot of effort.”

“If he’s physically fine then he’ll definitely start,” Inzaghi said of tomorrow’s derby.

Palacios Fitting In, Dumfries Could Start Vs Milan

Meanwhile, Inzaghi spoke about new Inter signing Tomas Palacios. “He’s doing well in training,” the coach said of the defender.

“He doesn’t speak Italian or English yet. Only Spanish.”

“So Correa and Lautaro are helping a lot,” Inzaghi said of the Argentine fitting in in training.

“He’s a young player with great prospects. He’s watching his teammates and learning.

“He has great technique and he reads the game,” Inzaghi said of Palacios. “And clearly he’s trying to fit into our back three defense and the principles of play we use – but you can see he wants to learn.”

Of Palacios’s position, Inzaghi said that “Having just arrived we’ve tried him as a wide centre-back.”

“But he has the reading of the game to play in the middle of a back three as well.”

Meanwhile, Inzaghi also updated on wingback Denzel Dumfries. The Dutchman has yet to start for Inter this season.

“He’s doing well,” the Inter coach said of Dumfries. “He’s come on and done well in the last few matches.”

“He’s one of the selection doubts I have for tomorrow, between he and Darmian, who had a great match in Manchester,” Inzaghi said.
