Inter Milan are planning to offer Yann Sommer a one-year contract extension, but not as first-choice goalkeeper. Instead, the Swiss veteran would serve as backup to incoming number one Guglielmo Vicario, the Spurs stopper identified as the club’s preferred long-term solution between the posts.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, Sommer has put off any decision on his future until June.
He will remain Inter’s first choice for the remaining eight league games this season, with Cristian Chivu also likely to hand Josep Martinez starts in the Coppa Italia.
Sommer’s situation is straightforward, a familiar face who knows the club and can provide experienced cover behind Vicario if the Tottenham move goes through.
Martinez’s position is far less clear.
Inter paid €15 million to sign the Spaniard from Genoa two summers ago, but according to Gazzetta, the club do not consider him reliable enough to serve as the undisputed number one.
That assessment has prompted serious reflection at Viale della Liberazione over his future.
His departure this summer looks increasingly likely, though nothing has been decided yet.
