Inter Milan are making swift progress in their negotiations with Lazio for their Ivan Provedel, who is on his way out of Rome.
The 32-year-old has been the Biancocelesti’s first choice between the posts since making the move from Spezia in June 2022, except for the final few months of the 2024/25 campaign, when he was usurped by Christos Mandas. Nevertheless, Maurizio Sarri reversed Marco Baroni’s decision upon his return to the club last summer, reinstating Provedel as his No.1.
The Fruilian shot-stopper returned to his best this season, registering 11 clean sheets in 27 Serie A fixtures, but his campaign ended in March due to a shoulder surgery. His absence paved the way for Edoardo Motta’s unexpected rise to stardom. The 21-year-old produced exceptional displays in the final stretch of the season, especially in the penalty shootouts against Atalanta in the Coppa Italia semi-final.
With Mandas returning from an unsuccessful loan stint at Bournemouth, and Motta identified as a long-term solution for the role, Provedel has become the odd man out. Lazio have decided to part ways with their most experienced goalkeeper, whose contract will expire next year, and all signs point towards a transfer to Inter.
According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, the Nerazzurri are closing in on a deal with Lazio for Provedel, who is all in favor of the move. The cutodian’s agent held talks with Lazio officials at Formello, with both parties sharing the intention of ending their collaboration and facilitating a move to San Siro.
The transfer market expects the two clubs to reach an agreement worth €2-3 million, which will generate a small capital for the Italian capital side. Provedel will initially serve as a backup for Josep Martinez, who has been identified as Inter’s new first-choice goalkeeper after overtaking the departing Yann Sommer in the pecking order.
In addition to Provedel, Lazio are also set to bid Alessio Romagnoli farewell, after agreeing to sell him to Al-Sadd for a similar figure.
