Inter Milan will have to go “back to the future” with two games in hand on Napoli in the Serie A title race.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCinterNews. They note the catching up that the Nerazzurri will have to do.
Inter currently find themselves looking up at Napoli in the Serie A table.
Going into today’s round of matches, the Nerazzurri are four points behind the Partenopei. Meanwhile, they’re two behind Atalanta after the Partenopei slipped up against Udinese yesterday.
However, there is a very big caveat. Inter have two games in hand on both teams at the moment.
The Nerazzurri and La Dea both participated in the Supercoppa Italiana. Therefore, like Juventus and AC Milan, they’ll have to make up a match in the league this week.
That is an example of how the extra competitions can complicate the fixture list for certain teams.
Napoli, in stark contrast, have neither any European football nor domestic cups to worry about. They can devote every bit of their focus to Serie A in the coming months.
Inter will be able to make up their Serie A match from the Supercoppa soon enough. They take on Bologna.
But even then, the Nerazzurri are going to have another match that they have to make up.
That is the Serie A clash away to Fiorentina from December. That match got postponed due to the shock medical emergency for midfielder Edoardo Bove.
This puts Inter in a tight spot.
The Nerazzurri know that their fate is in their own hands. They can take the points to overtake Napoli at the top, potentially.
However, there is certainly no guarantee that Inter will do so.
The Nerazzurri found that out the hard way in 2022. They had a game in hand against Bologna – the same opponent they’re set to face this week.
And a loss away in Emilia-Romagna proved to be decisive as Inter missed out on the Serie A title by the narrowest of margins to city rivals AC Milan.
So Inter will hope that they learned from that bitter experience.
The Nerazzurri can take control of the Serie A title if they win their games in hand. But doing so will require going “back to the future.”
