Inter Milan president Giuseppe Marotta has said “there is no harm in” aiming for the top as he underlined the Nerazzurri’s ambitions to lift the Scudetto.

The Inter president spoke at his ceremony for his honorary degree from the University of Milan-Bicocca, with quotes via TuttoMercatoWeb.

On aiming for the Scudetto, Marotta said “Inter is a great club and must always compete at the top level.”

He continued, “We must not be arrogant but we must be ambitious. In sport there is no harm in declaring such things.”

However, he acknowledged there may be “teams who are objectively stronger” than the Nerazzurri.

“We set out to reach our objectives, first and foremost qualification for the Champions League.

“Then, we will try to win something more important.”

Marotta also took the time to back head coach Cristian Chivu, who signed for Inter from Parma this summer.

“We have a great coach,” Marotta said, “It’s not an emergency situation and he’s certainly not a novice.”

“He is a well-prepared coach,” he continued, “Many judgements have been made by those who do not know him.

“They are reckless judgements that do not correspond to reality.”

Finally, Marotta also urged fans and press to have patience in Italian starlet Francesco Pio Esposito.

“We must not burden him with too much pressure,” Marotta said, “he was born in 2005 and is therefore very young.

“He certainly has all the professional qualities needed to become a champion as well,” Marotta continued.

“The path is very difficult and very long,” he acknowledged, “he must always keep humility and passion in his pocket: that can take him far.”
