Inter Milan have pulled the plug on the deal for Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman (h/t journalist Fabrizio Romano).

Negotiations have been stagnant with La Dea despite Inter’s verbal agreement with the Nigerian international.

Nicola Zalewski’s transfer from Inter to Atalanta was reported to be part of Lookman’s deal to bring down the fee, but that is not the case.

Inter’s €45 million bid was rejected by the Bergamo outfit, who are holding out for €50m.

With Atalanta unwilling to change their stance, the Nerazzurri are planning to inform Lookman’s entourage that they will withdraw from the negotiations.

The 27-year-old will return to training and be available for Atalanta’s Serie A opener against Pisa this weekend.

Atletico Madrid have also been linked with Lookman, but there are no active talks between the clubs.

While Lookman looks likely to continue at Atalanta, an exit cannot be ruled out before the end of the summer transfer window.

Inter have started looking for alternatives, with their focus on midfield reinforcements rather than the attack.

They have lined up Manu Kone as a top target, but AS Roma turned down their €45m proposal.

Genoa’s Morten Frendrup has been on Inter’s radar for a while. The Danish star has steadily grown into one of the best midfield talents in Serie A.

Inter also want to add a new defender to their ranks, with Benjamin Pavard attracting interest from Galatasaray, Marseille, Lille and Barcelona.

They are keen on signing Udinese centre-back Oumar Solet.
