As Italy prepare to face Norway in a World Cup qualifier, La Gazzetta dello Sport has thrown its weight behind the “double striker” system that helped the Azzurri turn around their last match against Moldova – a system that could now see Inter starlet Pio Esposito start at his home ground, San Siro.
According to the paper, via FCInterNews, Rino Gattuso has found his most natural setup:
“The double centre-forward is the right fit: not the only one Italy can wear, but the one that makes them feel most comfortable and secure.”
Italy’s late surge in Chisinau, powered by Retegui and Esposito, provided evidence enough.
The two strikers “kept the Moldovan defence pinned back, attacking every ball and creating danger with each cross.”
Indeed, something Italy lacked with Scamacca and Raspadori earlier in the match.
Moldova tired and the introduction of Dimarco and Politano brought better service from wide areas.
Therefore, La Gazzetta stressed that “the substance remains: Italy need forwards who make their presence felt and fight for every cross and long ball.”

Sunday’s meeting with Erling Haaland’s Norway could see Esposito and Retegui lead the line from the first whistle.
Indeed, the young Inter striker is set to start on the same pitch he now calls home.
“He’s one of those No.9s who bring strength, tactical intelligence and personality,” wrote La Gazzetta.
“Already on two goals for Italy, he plays with the confidence of a veteran. For a 2005-born player, not bad at all. If he continues like this, and Gattuso has no doubts, the future is his.”
