Inter wingback Denzel Dumfries has explained his visible frustration after being substituted against Cremonese, insisting that his reaction was simply born out of passion and competitiveness.
Speaking to Sport Mediaset after the Netherlands’ 4–0 away win over Malta, where he registered another assist, Dumfries made it clear there were no lingering issues from the incident.
“I was angry because it is normal – no player wants to come off,” he said, with quotes via FCInterNews.
“I always want to do my best for the team. In that moment there was emotion… but now we look ahead. Roma is next after the break and we need to win, it’s a difficult match.”

The 28-year-old also discussed the tactical differences between his roles with Inter and the Netherlands, alternating between wing-back in a 3-5-2 and full-back in a back four.
“For me it’s the same,” he explained.
“With four I have to wait for the right moments because there’s a winger ahead, with five I’m more in the box.
“I’ve always played in a back four for the Netherlands, so I’m used to both systems.”
Finally, Dumfries was asked about a potential clash with Italy should the Netherlands finish second in their group.
“We’re first,” he said firmly.
“I always look to win, not to finish second – that would be a negative mindset.”
The Netherlands cruised to victory over Malta on Thursday evening.
A brace from Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo and goals from Tijjani Reijnders and Memphis Depay sealed the win.
Dumfries assisted Depay’s late goal as the Dutch go three points clear in Group G.
