Mateo Kovacic captained Croatia to a 3-0 victory over Gibraltar in UEFA World Cup qualifying on Sunday.

Kovacic played 69 minutes in the Group L clash at Stadion Varteks in Varazdin before being replaced by Luka Modric while Josko Gvardiol was introduced on the hour mark for Marin Pongracic.

Toni Fruk opened the scoring on the half hour mark while late second half goals from Luka Sucic and Martin Erlic ensured three points for Zlatko Dalic’s men.

It cemented Croatia’s place at the summit of the table with a game in hand, three points ahead of Czech Republic, who lost 2-1 to Faroe Islands.

In the European section, group winners will qualify for the tournament in Canada, Mexico and USA, while the runners-up will participate in play-off matches.

Meanwhile, Tijjani Reijnders and Nathan Ake were both second half substitutes as Netherlands defeated Finland 4-0 in their qualifying clash.

Reijnders came on at the start of the second half for Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch while Ake was introduced in place of Tottenham Micky van de Ven for the final 20 minutes at Ajax’s Johan Cruijff ArenA.

The result, in front of 52,387 fans, extends Ronald Koeman’s Dutch side’s position at the summit of Group G as they stand three points ahead of Poland who beat Lithuania 2-0 tonight.

Aston Villa's Donyell Malen and Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk gave the hosts a 2-0 lead inside the first 20 minutes while Corinthians forward Memphis Depay rounded off an impressive first half by slotting in a 38th-minute penalty.

Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo blasted home a late fourth in the closing minutes following a pass from Tottenham's Xavi Simons.
