Ipswich fans and their team were making a first Premier League visit to St James’ Park in over 23 years.
Back in March 2002, former blues boss Bobby Robson was in charge at Newcastle United.
A 2-2 draw wasn’t enough to help Ipswich fans and their players from relegation back then, ending up third bottom in the 2001/02 Premier League table, sadly four points behind…Sunderland.
On Saturday, the Ipswich fans arrived on Tyneside knowing they needed a miracle, win all five remaining games and West Ham lose all of their five.
The Hammers lost their fifth last match of the season but Newcastle United winning 3-0 at St James’ Park, leaving Ipswich fans to contemplate next season in the Championship and to reflect on Saturday’s experience…
Ipswich fans commenting via their TWTD message board after losing 3-0 to Newcastle United:
‘They let themself down with the generic ‘Hey Jude’ but so happy to see they still play Local Hero and Blaydon Races which are local songs (if any of you have run the GNR you’ll appreciate the Local Hero tune).’
“Fair play to the Newcastle supporters.
Seemed gracious in victory, not gloating at our relegation like some other scummy fan bases might.
Proper club.’
‘Eg Arsenal
Entitled tw.ts.’
‘Best fans we’ve had down here I think.’
‘Yep, they were fantastic all day.
Got on the train at Darlington, chatting to one of their fans.
Went to the Rose and Crown on the Bigg Market and they were great in there too, and then at the end of the game with the lower tier turning and applauding and then the well wishes outside and on the way back to the station.
Proper fans, proper club.
They’ve enjoyed the success they’ve had this season (and will potentially get in the Champions League), but celebrated it for themselves, not to gloat over us.’
‘Absolutely, how the game should be.
All those other fan bases larging it over us about relegation, I’m struggling to see why they care so much, and I’m ignoring the budgies,
I’m talking about the seemingly random fans from a number of premier league teams, and other championship teams gloating, who as far as I was aware we’ve had no beef with.’
‘We went out for a post match meal in Newcastle tonight and were stopped by quite a few Newcastle fans on the way to congratulate the Ipswich players and fans. I have always enjoyed my trips to St James’ park, although today was with the disappointment of relegation.’
‘They’ve been relegated twice in the last 15 yrs so probably appreciate what Town have been through.’
‘A lot of the tier below turned and applauded us – don’t think I’ve ever seen that in a similar situation. And several wished us all the best as we walked to the Metro. I’m a bit biased as I went to Uni there and have nothing but fond memories of the place and it’s people.’
‘I was in with the Geordie corporate lot on Saturday.
Halfway line, plush seats AND the town support was in excellent voice throughout. Brilliant.
Had to bite my tongue about them getting excited over Johnson’s second yellow and the penalty – I mean, as if they needed any additional help on Saturday.
Bobby Moncur was very complimentary afterwards but spoiled it when referring to the win as “run of the mill” and “expected”.
Ruel Fox in attendance too.’
‘Been supporting Ipswich this year while in premier league, but need a new team now they got relegated.
Options:
Liverpool – i like their kit, and as champions they’re good for glory hunting Man City – Perfect team for plastic fans. They had no fans a decade ago but now have millions West Ham – great team for wannabe cockneys but could get relegated Newcastle Utd – Sir Bobby connection but got funny accents which I’d find hard to do
Thoughts?’
‘Palmer wasn’t fouled [for that disallowed Bruno goal], that was awful goalkeeping.’
‘I don’t think the two are mutually exclusive. In simple terms, he was impeded but I also think he should have cleaned out the ball and player…but then I grew up in the 1980s.’
‘In what way was he impeded? Bruno had a right to stand there, which is all he did.’
‘Yes, Palmer wasn’t fouled.
I couldn’t believe what I was watching when he did that.’
‘I saw it that the Newcastle player stood his ground and Palmer bounced off him, he’s entitled to look in any direction he choses. Of course every defender called for it, it’s their job, that doesn’t make it a foul. It’s not fun to have a go at Palmer, which I’m not anyway, I’m saying he made a mistake which fortunately he got away with.’
‘I’ve watched it back a few times and it looks more like Palmer just bounces off him, I found it baffling in real time. I’d have been far less angry had that been given rather than the penalty.’
‘Many Newcastle fans are biased, even when they think they’re being objective.
Many Ipswich fans are biased, even when they think they’re being objective.
Those fans who are biased very often have a go at those who try to make decisions on an objective basis and sometimes get it wrong (referees) and those who try to analyse and comment on games on an objective basis and sometimes get it wrong (‘pundits’).
I think we all need to strive hard to be objective. Especially once games have finished. Blood boiling is not good for one’s health.
Plus, yesterday’s game hardly had any impact on the outcome of our season (still less one yellow card decision over which many are fuming).’
‘As a veteran of the 70s I’ve always been bit self conscious of wearing colours at away grounds.
Yesterday I didn’t feel at all uncomfortable walking to and from the station or on the platform.
Several Newcastle fans spoke to me and all were respectful and polite. Great fans, great club and great team and I wish them well next season.’
‘Yes, thought that in the pub pre-match. Absolutely no issue with away fans and plenty of locals happy to talk football.’
‘Easier to be magnanimous after a 3-0 home victory where your team has benefited from a couple of dubious refereeing decisions.’
‘Yeah that made all the difference, as they had been such a nasty bunch before the game!’
‘Three words to describe this match..
Top Six Bias.’
‘A reffing disgrace’
‘Auf Wiedersehen Pet’
‘Time after time this season we’ve had the opportunity to compete in games taken away from us by appalling refereeing decisions which have the look of being biased against promoted clubs.
It is a disgrace.’
‘They were clearly going to win it before the sending off. Not saying those decisions were right just that we have been really poor as well.’
‘I’m not so sure, Newcastle took 20 minutes to have a shot, we’d done ok up to the red card. Their purple patch where they admittedly could have scored three or four was the 10 minutes before half-time between red card and penalty.’
‘Talk about where the likes of Newcastle, Brighton, Forest and Wolves have come from and that is our long-term aim. But let’s not sound like we are chewing sour grapes and clutching at straws.’
‘Whether you call it bias or soft corruption (the pressure, the money, expectations of big clubs with influence, the media etc) it is hard enough to compete with the massive gap that has been purposely created by the PL closed shop system. Hard enough without the dice loaded against you as well.
And lets not completely write off actual corruption. Thats how corrupt people get away with it.
Look at the massive amounts of cash involved, the foreign powers etc etc’
‘Serious talk of actual corruption is nonsense. Complete tinpot nonsense.’
‘What is being gained by who from fixing a game between a Champions League chasing team and one that’s as good as relegated?’
‘A club run by Saudi Arabia might be a more attractive proposition in the Champions League than, say, Aston Villa.
Saying that, I don’t personally think it’s corrupt. Just inept and perhaps human nature to favour the bigger teams/players.’
‘You know how much money is involved in the Champs league? And who owns Newcastle?’
‘I know you’re being a complete divvy that much is for sure.’
‘The referee was an abomination, the Newcastle player should have been booked for simulation as it was never a penalty, Burn took down Johnson.’
‘Take your blue tinted glasses off, Johnson dived.
If we hadn’t have been given that penalty we would have been furious. Enciso had no need to do it.’
‘It’s a soft penalty. But it’s a penalty. Enciso had no reason to put his hand on him, its stupidity.
Johnson started jumping before he got past him, and then stupidly got a second yellow.
Like most weeks we’ve only got ourselves to blame.’
