Ipswich Town are back in the mix to sign Jens Cajuste this summer after he spent last season on loan at Portman Road.

According to Football Italia, the Suffolk outfit have intervened following links between the midfielder and Turkish giants Besiktas.

It has been claimed that the Championship side have made another approach to sign the 25-year-old.

Cajuste arrived on loan from Napoli last summer, and featured 30 times in the Premier League for Kieran McKenna’s side.

When asked if it would be a big coup if the club signed the Swede, FLW’s Ipswich fan pundit Adam Wilkin claimed he could be a bargain signing if a deal in the region of £7 to 10 million could be agreed.

He feared the cost of a deal would be much higher earlier in the summer, but is now confident they should push to get him back to the club if he is available at that kind of price.

“When we were first linked with Jens I did think it would be a big risk of a signing, given his injury record and his potential physical limitations in terms of playing Saturday, Tuesday in the Championship,” Wilkin told Football League World.

“That was when our £10 million obligation to buy if we stayed in the Premier League was no longer active and I thought Napoli would be trying to charge more than that.

“But it seems now that they’re quite desperate to get him off the books, and the fee that Besiktas were linked with was even less than that.

“I think it was only a £1 million loan fee with £6 million to make it permanent, which is even less.

“So, at the time, I thought £10 million was an absolute bargain back at the beginning of the transfer market, I thought we’d have to pay more.

“But if we can get him for that £7 million fee, that would be an unbelievable signing.

“I think his quality is far above Championship level, his ability on the ball.

“It depends who we pair him with, how successful he could be, or there might need to be a tactical shift because, as good as he was on the ball last season in the Premier League, that midfield in general lacked physicality and a bit of defensive solidity.

“So it depends on who we’d pair him with.

“But I think if we can get that deal done it would be a massive bargain.”

Ipswich will begin their Championship season on 8 August with a trip to face Birmingham City.

Cajuste signing at £7 million would be good business

Ipswich missed out on a permanent deal for Cajuste when they were unable to survive in the Premier League.

And it remains to be seen whether he would want to compete in the Championship next season.

However, if he can be convinced to sign, especially at a cost of around £7 million, then that would be great business for the Tractor Boys.

While he struggled in the Premier League, his performances in Serie A that convinced Ipswich to sign him were still quite strong, and he’s now had a year to adjust to English football, so should be better prepared to thrive in the second tier.
