Iraq secured a 2-1 play-off win over Bolivia in Monterrey to reach the World Cup for only the second time, 40 years after 1986. They will face France in Philadelphia on 22 June, the second group match for Didier Deschamps' side.
According to L'Équipe, Iraq sought a postponement three weeks earlier after their airspace was closed amid war involving the United States and Israel. Several players then went from Baghdad to Monterrey via Jordan and Portugal, yet the Lions of Mesopotamia still prevailed.
Ali al-Hamad headed them in front in the 10th minute. Bolivia coach Oscar Villegas had warned about their set-piece threat, yet his team conceded from one.
Bolivia levelled on 38 minutes when Ramiro Vaca mishit a shot that ran to Moises Paniagua. After the break Iraq stepped up again, and Aymen Hussein finished from close range on 54 minutes.
Arnold's side play 4-4-2, favour long balls and second phases. Up front, Al-Hamadi and Hussein are 1.89m and 1.87m, strong and tireless.
They often attack with four and defend with eleven. The full-backs rarely advance, the midfield lacks polish and the defence can wobble, but they contest every ball.
Appointed in May, Arnold said he focused on mindset, told players to avoid social media and stressed they have nothing to lose against France, Senegal and Norway, aiming to shock the world.
Luton Town forward Al-Hamadi spoke of unprecedented emotion and said Iraqis deserve this joy, calling his side fighters who reflect their people's story.
