Iraq’s 2026 World Cup intercontinental play-off is in jeopardy after the closure of Iraqi airspace, with head coach Graham Arnold stranded in Dubai.
“We are currently scattered around the world and trying to prepare as best we can. We have to act as if the match will go ahead, but it seems unlikely for now. We are in contact with FIFA, who want the game to take place, but many obstacles remain. They will have to make a decision soon,” a source close to the Iraqi squad told The Guardian.
Iraq are due to face the winner of Bolivia v Suriname, set for 26 March, in Monterrey on 31 March.
Iraqi airspace has been shut since US and Israeli strikes on Iran last weekend. The report said the federation had been informed by Iraqi Airways and the transport ministry that the closure would last at least four weeks, restricting travel for many players.
FIFA and the AFC have been kept informed of developments. With the airspace closed, Arnold cannot leave the United Arab Emirates, and embassy closures are preventing visas for Mexico for several players and staff.
Iraq have reached the World Cup finals only once, in 1986 in Mexico, where they lost 1-0 to Paraguay, 2-1 to Belgium and 1-0 to the hosts in the group stage.
