Liverpool’s famed academy has long been a breeding ground for future stars, with the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones emerging from Kirkby’s ranks. Now, attention turns to the club’s goalkeeping department, where Kornel Misciur is making waves. In a recent episode of The Academy Podcast on Anfield Index, host Ben Pescod and academy expert Lewis Bower discussed the young shot-stopper’s potential, with Bower declaring him “probably the best goalkeeping prospect we’ve seen.”
Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper, Alisson Becker, has set a world-class standard between the sticks. Finding a long-term successor is no easy task, but 18-year-old Kornel Misciur appears to be catching the right kind of attention.
Bower, who has extensively covered Liverpool’s youth setup, was full of praise for the Polish-born keeper, stating: “He’s putting in the performances to prove that he deserves it.” Misciur has already established himself as Liverpool’s under-21 goalkeeper, an unusual feat for a player of his age. “The first-year scholar usually doesn’t play too much in his first season, but Misciur is different,” Bower noted.
One of Misciur’s standout qualities is his commanding presence in goal. Bower drew comparisons with Liverpool’s current number one, saying: “He’s got a real big frame, similar to Alisson.” While still learning his trade, the young keeper has already impressed the coaching staff at Kirkby, even earning opportunities to travel with the senior squad.

“He’s been around the first team on occasion, which goes to show that he’s highly rated in the side,” Bower added. His eligibility for Poland’s national setup also underlines his growing reputation beyond Anfield.
Breaking into Liverpool’s first team as a goalkeeper is notoriously difficult. Caoimhin Kelleher has spent years as Alisson’s deputy, while Adrian provides experienced backup. However, Misciur’s trajectory suggests he could be a serious contender in the years to come.
Bower pointed out the challenges ahead, acknowledging that “goalkeeping positions are always hard to break into,” but he remains confident in Misciur’s long-term potential. “Even if it’s not Liverpool, I think he’s going to have a good career,” he stated.
While Liverpool’s immediate focus is on securing Champions League football under Arne Slot, the development of players like Misciur is vital to the club’s long-term strategy.
If Misciur continues on his current path, he may well follow in the footsteps of previous academy graduates who made the leap to first-team football. Liverpool’s history of producing top talent suggests that the young goalkeeper’s rise is one to watch closely.
For now, he remains a promising prospect, but as Bower noted: “He’s still learning on the job.” If he continues to develop at this rate, it might not be long before we hear his name mentioned alongside Alisson in Liverpool’s goalkeeping hierarchy.
