Argentina take on Switzerland in the quarter-finals of the World Cup 2026 this evening, with the holders hoping to take another step towards retaining the biggest prize in the sport.
Lionel Messi and co. managed to rally to a dramatic comeback in one of the games of the tournament so far as they beat Egypt 3-2 in the round of 16, though they will have to better this weekend against a talented Swiss side.
Murat Yakin’s team scraped past Colombia on penalties to book their place in the last eight, though they have shown they can be a tricky customer, and Lionel Scaloni will not underestimate his opponents after almost losing to Egypt.
Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the game.
Argentina vs Switzerland is due to kick off at 2am BST on Sunday 12 July in Kansas City (8pm local time).
Viewers in the United Kingdom can watch the match live on ITV, with coverage on the channel from 1.15am BST. A live stream will be available via ITVX.
The winners of this tie will meet Norway or England in the semi-finals, with that match taking place in Atlanta on Wednesday, 15 July at 8pm BST.
Lionel Scaloni has a fully fit squad to select from with his decisions coming down to the best team suited to beat the Swiss. EitherJulian Alvarez or Lautaro Martinez will start up top alongside Lionel Messi who is ready to go. The only other area for concern is at left-back where Scaloni must decide on the starter between Facundo Medina or Nicolas Tagliafico.
Possible Argentina XI: Martinez; Molina, Romero, Martinez, Tagliafico; De Paul, Fernandez, Mac Allister; Messi, Alvarez, Almada.
For Switzerland, Murat Yakin has doubts over Michel Aebischer and Luca Jaquez while 20-year-old Johan Manzambi is expected to be absent due to a knee injury that meant he missed the last-16 win over Colombia. Manzambi’s knock is expected to keep him out for at least two weeks meaning his World Cup campaign could already be over.
