On the cusp of stability and evolution, St. Louis City is at a defining moment. Following months of uncertainty after the departure of Bradley Carnell and interim leadership by John Hackworth, Olof Mellberg has emerged as the leading candidate to take charge of the club. But who is Mellberg, and what can he bring to St. Louis ?

It's important to note that before Mellberg became a coach, he had a playing career. The Swedish defender made many of his playing days as a dependable and strong central defender for clubs such as Aston Villa, Juventus, and Olympiacos. He soon became one of the fans' favorite players with Aston Villa in the Premier League, where he spent eight years of his playing career and earned a reputation as a born leader.

Although his time at Juventus was short, Mellberg was part of the club's rebuilding process after a match-fixing scandal shook Italian soccer. At Olympiacos, he added some hardware to his résumé to show he could win trophies in varied competitive situations.

This is much more than a value-added footnote on Mellberg's résumé, but rather a pivotal component that might have helped shape the mentality and ambitions of St. Louis City.

A Coach Who Relishes Building from Scratch

Mellberg is not new to taking on big challenges. Having started his coaching career in 2013, he has never failed to prove that he can change teams. The best example is the period he spent at IF Brommapojkarna, a Swedish club that he managed and promoted consecutively back to the top tier of Swedish soccer.

That would be the case when he arrived at St. Louis City, to build a strong and competitive identity at an extremely demanding league such as MLS. Though the league structure might be quite different from European competitions, Mellberg has proved that he can adjust his methods to get results in tough situations.

Cultural Challenge of MLS

One factor may be the transition that Mellberg made to Major League Soccer. Major League Soccer has its own unique framework, like salary caps, drafts, and roster rules that may be a puzzle for foreign coaches.

But the experience Mellberg has with clubs across Spain, Italy, Greece, and Denmark could be an asset at his disposal. He knows how to adapt to different scenarios and work with players from different backgrounds, which is crucial in a league as multicultural as MLS.
