FC Bayern secured a 2-1 victory in Tuesday’s friendly against Jeju SK FC. Felipe Chavez and Bastian Assomo scored the goals. Several young prospects made their mark, but the established pros also saw some playing time. Minjae Kim was among them.

The center back received a frenetic welcome in his home country and led FC Bayern’s well-mixed squad onto the field as captain. Kim was greeted with more than just a warm welcome; for him, this Asian tour is, of course, a very important event on a purely emotional level as well.

However, the South Korean was taken off the field after just 30 minutes. That surprised many. Was there a problem?

Kompany explains: This is why Kim was substituted early

While the match was still in progress, there was no specific information about Kim’s condition. After the game, however, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany quickly clarified the situation.

“Minjae is an important player for us. It was simply a matter of managing his workload, because he’ll be playing 60 minutes against Aston Villa on Friday,” said the coach. Kim has been repeatedly linked with a transfer this summer, but he himself would like to stay with the record champions. In addition, club officials have already decided internally that, barring any unforeseen circumstances, he will remain the third-choice center back.

Kompany went on to explain: “He can’t play any more at this stage. It was great that he got to start here in South Korea and wear the captain’s armband. But of course, we couldn’t take any risks. That was the plan.”

Not only for Kim, but also for the other players who competed in the World Cup this summer, the workload is now being gradually increased. The goal is for these players to be in top form by the time of the Super Cup against BVB (August 22) or, at the latest, by the league opener six days later against VfB Stuttgart.
