Today we celebrate, Chivahermanos! This February 14, the entire Nación Rojiblanca honors one of the names forever etched in Guadalajara’s history—a footballer who not only lifted trophies, but helped build the club’s greatness with talent, character, and passion. We are talking about Isidoro Díaz, who turns 88 today and is remembered as a key piece of the unforgettable 'Campeonísimo,' a legend who continues to shine in the memory of the Rebaño Sagrado.
When and where was 'Chololo' born?
Isidoro Díaz was born on February 14, 1938, in Acatlán de Juárez, Jalisco. With deep roots in the state, his connection to Guadalajara began from the very start.
His early days in football
From a young age, Díaz developed his love for the game in his hometown. He played with makeshift rag balls on improvised volleyball courts, often barefoot alongside his friends. It was there, through pure joy and passion, that he first sharpened the talent that would later define his successful journey with Chivas.
Arrival to the Rebaño Sagrado
His quality did not go unnoticed. At just 15 years old, directors from Club Deportivo Guadalajara saw him play in Acatlán and invited him for a trial. At the time, head coach José María Casullo was convinced of his ability and immediately requested his registration so he could join the squad traveling to face Zacatepec.
Debut with Guadalajara
His official debut came on August 21, 1955, in Matchday 7 of the 1955–56 season against the Cañeros of 'Coruco' Díaz. Although the Rebaño fell 3-0, Isidoro displayed personality and character on the field—qualities that quickly earned him a permanent place in the team.
What position did he play?
During his playing career, he featured as a winger on both flanks. His speed and ability to take on defenders were crucial in creating crosses, attacking plays, and goals that fueled the 'Campeonísimo' forward line.
How many titles did he win with Guadalajara?
As part of the one and only true 'Campeonísimo' of Mexican football, Isidoro Díaz contributed to seven Liga titles, six Campeón de Campeones trophies, and one Copa México. He was also part of the squad that lifted the 1962 CONCACAF Champions’ Cup, solidifying one of the most glorious eras in club history.
A historic goal at the Estadio Jalisco
Another moment that cemented his legend status came on February 11, 1960, when he scored Chivas’ first-ever goal at the Estadio Jalisco against Club Deportivo Oro.
World Cup career
Isidoro Díaz’s talent also led him to represent the Mexican National Team at the highest level. 'Chololo' played in three FIFA World Cups: 1962 FIFA World Cup, 1966 FIFA World Cup, and 1970 FIFA World Cup, establishing himself as a standout figure of his generation.
Additionally, in 1968 he added another memorable chapter by scoring against Brazil at the legendary Maracanã Stadium—an achievement few players in history can claim.
For the dedication you showed to these colors, today the entire Nación Rojiblanca comes together to wish you a very Happy Birthday, 'Chololo'!
