The latest stage in Oliver Whatmuff’s development away from Manchester City has delivered far more than just senior minutes.
Whatmuff’s first full season of senior football came with the sort of pressure City’s academy system alone cannot recreate.
The goalkeeper moved to Rochdale last 2025. Based in the town of the same name, the side competed in the Vanarama National League for the 2025-26 season.
Manchester City targeting Championship loan for goalkeeper amid Premier League interest
Following three years outside the professional leagues, Rochdale were keen on getting back to the EFL. Needless to say, it was a big test for Whatmuff, who would face promotion expectations in senior football.
However, the 18-year-old managed to withstand the pressure and helped Rochdale win promotion to League Two.
Speaking to Manchester City’s official website, Whatmuff recently admitted that the idea of a loan occurred to him following last season’s FA Youth Cup final.
City U18s lost 3-1 to Aston Villa at Villa Park as the game saw more than 25,000 people attend in Birmingham. Likewise, Whatmuff was swayed by the atmosphere of a large crowd.
“I think I realised I needed to go somewhere, like we played in front of quite a few fans, and I wanted to do that every week,” Whatmuff said.
Following the move, Rochdale immediately felt like the right environment for the teenager. The town is located in the Greater Manchester area and the club shares stylistic similarities with Manchester City.

“As soon as I came to Rochdale, it felt like home straight away. The style definitely mirrors City. I was surprised at first, to be honest”, Whatmuff added.
After a season playing alongside the goalkeeper, the club’s captain, Ethan Ebanks-Landell, was impressed by Whatmuff’s maturity.
“I don’t want to put too much pressure on him but I think he’ll play for England. I think he’s a top keeper, already one of the best players I’ve played with so far,” Ebanks-Landell added.
The National League promotion final ended in a 2-2 draw against Boreham Wood. Nevertheless, Whatmuff saved two penalties in the shootout to help Rochdale get promoted to the EFL.
Whatmuff played 40 games in the National League this season, experiencing the intensity of senior football.
He only conceded 34 goals and kept 18 clean sheets throughout the campaign. The goalkeeper was also named in the National League’s Team of the Season.
Regardless, Whatmuff had only signed a one-season loan with Rochdale. He’ll be back at his boyhood club now and won’t be playing in League Two, at least with the same outfit.
Nevertheless, top Premier League clubs are already taking notice, with Brighton and Brentford showing interest in the 18-year-old.
However, City aren’t willing to budge from an eight-figure valuation and are also keen on including a buy-back clause. Likewise, the goalkeeper’s development will be a story to watch with expectations set for national team prominence.
