Bayern Munich have been in negotiations for some time with Dayot Upamecano and his representatives over a potential contract extension beyond 2026.

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, sporting director Christoph Freund confirmed that while the final outcome remains uncertain, the parties remain in “good talks”.

“A lot is being written, and a lot is being reported, sometimes in one direction and sometimes in the other. It's turbulent, what's being reported, but that's not how it is at all! These are really good talks, and it's not complicated,” Freund said.

Upamecano has spent the past four and a half years at Bayern, and with several top European clubs monitoring his situation, the Frenchman faces an important decision about his future.

“Upa is simply a world-class defender who is currently playing at the highest level and is in great form. It’s an important and big decision for him, and he’s a very important player for us,” Freund said.

“I can't say right now how quickly he will make his final decision. But it won't drag on endlessly.

“There are always different approaches. It’s not just about money for Upa. It’s simply a very important decision for him, as he’s in his prime footballing age. Other clubs are of course noticing that he’s playing at a world-class level. But he feels very, very comfortable here, with the team, the coach, and the whole club.”

So far this season, the French defender has featured in 20 competitive matches for Bayern, starting 19 of them.
