Nicolo Barella is returning at the right time for Inter Milan, with big matches against Roma and Juventus just on the horizon.

Inter have been without Barella for a couple weeks due to injury.

The 27-year-old missed the last three matches before the international break.

And the Nerazzurri coped just fine in Barella’s absence. Davide Frattesi started in 3-2 wins over Udinese and Torino in Serie A, whilst Piotr Zielinski started in a rout of Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League.

But that does not mean that Inter won’t be overjoyed to have Barella back.

The Italian international remains an absolutely key player for Inter in midfield.

Barella’s combination of physical intensity with technical polish means that even Frattesi and Zielinski cannot quite replicate the kind of influence he has in the midfield battle at his best.

Inter managed to beat both Udinese and Torino without Barella available.

But, with all due respect to the Friulani and the Granata, both well-organized teams who can make life difficult for anyone, these were matches that Inter will have expected to win.

Things will get a bit harder for the Nerazzurri after the international break.

Next Sunday, Inter travel to the Italian capital to take on Roma.

That will be a very challenging match, even if the Giallorossi have had a tough start to the season.

Barella’s availability will certainly be a boost, therefore, as Inter look to record three wins in a row in Serie A for the first time this season.

Then, the following weekend, it is the big one.

Inter will host Juventus in the Derby d’Italia.

That fixture is always one of the showpiece occasions of Italian football. And there is a sense that the result will have a big impact in the Serie A title race as it often does.

Both Inter and Juventus will be aiming to have their best players available and in form for that match.
