Enzo Maresca admitted that Chelsea have to deal with counter attacks and set pieces better after conceding a last-minute equaliser to Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Bees went ahead in the 35th minute when Kevin Schade was released on the break, firing into the bottom right corner with a low, hard strike.

The introduction of Cole Palmer flipped the game on its head as the playmaker turned home Joao Pedro’s cross on the hour mark.

Chelsea appeared to be on their way to victory after Moises Caicedo rifled the ball past Caoimhín Kelleher with just five minutes of normal time remaining.

But they were denied at the death when Schade’s long throw found Kristoffer Ajer, whose header was met by substitute Fabio Carvalho for a tap-in at the back post.

“We knew that it was a tough game,” Maresca told Sky Sports. “The first half we struggled to find solutions, the space because they were defending very good.

“I think second half we were much better. It’s a shame because we concede in the 94th minute and we could manage better that moment.”

Asked if the Brentford goals were avoidable, the Italian responded: “You have to be able to avoid transitions and set pieces; they scored from transitions and set pieces. It’s something we deal quite well with during the game but in the end we concede and it’s a shame.”

The Chelsea boss felt his side did enough to win game after the break, having failed to create many openings in the first half.

“I think we were much, much better. I think we deserve to win the game second half but it’s a shame. We lost two points.”

The Blues remain unbeaten with two wins and two draws in their opening four games, while the return of Palmer following his recovery from a groin injury is a massive boost for the club.

“Almost three weeks out for him, we know how it is, we know he will help us and he was very good when inside [the team].”
