Press conference ahead of away game vs. Union Berlin

It’s crunch time in the Bundesliga. SV Werder now have three games to go, and Ole Werner’s side are looking to get some important points on the board when they travel to Union Berlin on Saturday, 3rd May (15:30 CEST). At the press conference on Wednesday ahead of their meeting with Union, Ole Werner spoke about…

… the draw with St. Pauli: “We obviously can’t be satisfied, because we were at home and it’s clear that we’re at a crucial stage of the season. I can understand the disappointment. We can still look at it positively though. We’ve got 16 points from our last seven matches. We always set high standards for ourselves, but we should also recognise that we’ve had a great season so far and we want to continue with this momentum.”

… anxiousness about letting things slip at the end of the season: “You can only let something slip if you already have it in your grasp, and we haven’t got that yet. We’ve got a chance and put ourselves in a good position. Other teams who we’re competing against for the higher positions are well ahead of us financially and on paper. It doesn’t matter if the opponent is a bigger or a smaller name. We always go out onto the pitch wanting to win games. It’s no fluke that we are where we are in the table. It’s because of a sensational effort from us. This is a great chance for us that we haven’t just happened to fall into, but have made for ourselves through hard work. We’ve also had periods where it wasn’t going as well, and we stuck together as a team and got through them. Therefore, we should be proud of what this team has achieved and that we’re going toe-to-toe with these other sides. I’m really up for these last three games.”

…opponents Union Berlin: “Their style of play makes it very difficult for you to score past them. It could therefore be a similar game to Bochum and St. Pauli. Our performance against Bochum in particular can be a good benchmark. Two teams are facing each other who have been very defensively solid recently. They have rediscovered their strengths of defending deep and counterattacking, so we’ll have to remain patient, not play into their hands and find ways of breaking through an opponent who sits deep. Set pieces could be an important avenue for us too.”

????️ Werner on the two away games in the final three matches: "We're not thinking about that a lot. I wouldn't read too much into it. They'll be three open games. Anything can happen in the final few matches. I don't think we're at a disadvantage." #werder #fcusvw[image or embed]— SV Werder Bremen EN (@en.werder.de) April 30, 2025 at 10:34 AM

“You can tell that good things are happening in Bremen”

…possible suspensions for Stage and Lynen: “That could happen, but we’ve got players who’ll step up and like it when we put our trust in them. It’d be good if it’s not a silly yellow card. All the lads are ready though and will do a good job.”

…Union head coach Steffen Baumgart: “I’ve had some very positive experiences playing against him. I like seeing him. He’s a great guy and very affable. I’m happy that he’s steering Union in the right direction. The 7-1 aside, all of our meetings have been very close.”

…the final of the DFB-Pokal Frauen: “I’ll be following the match from my sofa tomorrow and I’ll obviously be watching with my fingers crossed. You can tell that good things are happening in Bremen. That’s because of the way things are developing and the good job that everyone at the club has done. There’s a lot going on. They’ve had a great season so far. They can play with freedom – why not try and cause an upset? That’s why I’ve got my fingers firmly crossed.”
