Goalkeeper Josep Martinez is finally set to get his chance in the Inter Milan starting eleven following an unexpected injury to Yann Sommer.
Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, highlight the opportunity – and the risk – for the Spanish international.
Inter Milan signed goalkeeper Josep Martinez from Genoa last summer.
The Nerazzurri outlaid right around €15 million for the former RB Leipzig and Las Palmas keeper, including add-ons.
That is hardly a small fee by Inter’s standards. And it is a testament to the fact that Inter really do see Martinez as a future starter.
The plan was always clear. Martinez would be the backup to reliable veteran Sommer this season. Then, he would start to take over from the Swiss.
However, Martinez may well have expected a few more opportunities in the starting eleven than he’s gotten so far.
To date, the Spaniard has started just one match for Inter. That came in the Coppa Italia against Udinese.
But that’s all about to change.
Yesterday, Inter confirmed that Yann Sommer will have some time on the sidelines due to a thumb injury.

It is not exactly clear when the former Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach will return.
However, Sommer will certainly miss a few matches.
That will mean that Martinez’s first match for Inter in Serie A will be against his former side Genoa tomorrow.
Then, Martinez will be in goal for next weekend’s top-of-the-table clash with Napoli as well.
The 26-year-old is also likely to start at least the first leg of Inter’s Champions League round of sixteen tie.
The pressure is certainly going to be on Martinez. The Spaniard is coming into the team right as the season truly starts to heat up in several competitions.
But this could be just the right moment for Martinez to stake his claim in goal for the future.
