Arsenal’s narrow 1-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield was a result shaped by “a moment of magic,” according to Robbie Lyle on the latest post-match reaction on AFTV. Speaking shortly after the final whistle, the AFTV founder delivered an honest assessment, praising Arsenal’s performance and expressing cautious optimism about the season ahead despite the disappointment.
“It’s hard to take,” Robbie admitted. “We shouldn’t really be leaving here with nothing, but that’s football, man.” A stunning free kick was the difference, and Lyle made no excuses. “You can’t argue with that. That free kick reminded me a bit like Declan Rice’s one against Real Madrid. I mean, unstoppable.”
The frustration was amplified by the fact that Arsenal were very much in the game. “I thought the first half in particular, we controlled the game,” Robbie said. “Liverpool hadn’t really done much up until then.”
Indeed, both sides appeared evenly matched throughout. “I think you saw the two teams there today that are going to push to win this league this year,” he added. “There’s not a lot to separate the two teams.”
Injuries meant Arsenal were without key players like William Saliba and Bukayo Saka, but those who stepped in impressed. “When Saliba went off at the start of the game, I was like, ‘Oh my God, how many more times are we going to come here and not have our full side out?’ But I thought Mosquera came in, I thought he was unbelievable,” said Robbie.

Zubimendi and Madueke also drew praise. “Zubimendi was excellent. Madueke coming in for Saka, he was really, really good, one of the best players on Arsenal’s team. He was cooking Kirk down that side.”
The strength of Arsenal’s bench has often been questioned, but Robbie saw signs of real progress. “Finally, we’ve got a good squad,” he said. “The players that stepped in did brilliantly… it bodes really, really well for the season going forward.”
Some fans expressed concern about Mikel Arteta’s conservative starting XI. “Fans were upset. It looked like we were going defensive,” the host noted. But Robbie defended the approach. “You’re coming to Anfield and you know it’s going to be a tough game. You do have to be a little bit cautious.”
Reflecting on the decision to start Merino, he said, “The Merino one surprised me, him going with Marino right from the start, but we got to respect where we’re coming to as well.”
Though the game was decided by a set piece, Robbie wasn’t quick to criticise. “Really, the game has turned on a set piece. I’ve not looked at the shot ratio and things like that, but it looked to me like we were the more attacking team throughout the game.”
Despite the loss, Robbie came away with optimism. “I think we’ve shown today we got a good squad. Maybe we could have been a bit more attacking, but I think that will come once Eze’s bedded in a bit more.”
He closed with a measured take on the bigger picture. “It’s too early in the season. They’ve got nine points, we’ve got six. We just got to lick our wounds, but I think there’s a lot of positives for us to hold on to going forward.”
Arsenal’s display at Anfield, even in defeat, offered supporters reasons to believe. In Robbie Lyle’s view, the performance was a credible one against the reigning champions, Liverpool, and may well signal Arsenal’s sustained presence in the title race for 2025.
