Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor says that this weekend’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Chelsea is more than just another game.

The Cityzens face The Blues at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening. The game sees the top two clubs in the Barclays Women’s Super League go head-to-head.

When speaking in the pre-match press conference, Manchester City boss Taylor admitted that the game is huge for both clubs and that his side are looking forward to the challenge.

“It’s more than just another game,” Taylor said. “We have played some really good stuff so far this season and have gained some good results along the way. We’ve been really difficult to play against and had really good intentions with what we are doing on the pitch.

“There is no denying the fact that these games are really important. I wouldn’t say that they are more important than any other game in the WSL because the margins are so tight as we’ve seen.

“For us, it’s a good game. The fact that it’s at Stamford Bridge gives us something a little bit different. We are looking forward to the challenge.”

Manchester City have not lost away from home in the Barclays Women’s Super League for more than a year and Taylor says that his side can take confidence from their good form.

He said “We take a lot of confidence from that. The players and myself probably don’t get to hear those types of stats, we just go from game-to-game.

“This season, 10 wins on the bounce in all competitions is the thing that we are hanging onto in terms of that’s what we get from the work that we put in. More often than not, we give ourselves a really good chance with our performances that we put in and that’s what’s happened this season.

“The girls have followed the plan well. Nothing changes for Chelsea but we have a plan with and without the ball and that’s going to be really important for us. We know the areas that they try to exploit and we know the areas that we can exploit, so nothing changes.

“Our confidence is high but we know that everything that we have done this season has had to be earned and we are determined to earn as much as we can. It doesn’t always guarantee you the result but we know that if we work tremendously hard in this game and give a really good account of ourselves, we have an opportunity to be successful.”

Taylor comes up against new Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor for the first time and he is excited to test himself against the Frenchwoman.

He said “I am [looking forward to the rivalry]. I’ve met her on a couple of occasions and she’s impressive. I think she’s engaging, very warm and we will both be trying our very best to help our teams be successful on Saturday.”

Manchester City’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Chelsea kicks-off at 5.30pm on Saturday evening.
