Bernardo Silva believes Manchester City are firmly out of this season’s race for the Premier League title after a run of torrid form across competitions of late.

There has been a slight up-turn for the reigning Premier League champions either side of the New Year celebrations, having recorded back-to-back wins for the first time since late October and seeing the gap close between themselves and 2nd-placed Arsenal.

A win on the road against Leicester City thanks to goals from Savinho and Erling Haaland was followed up by a convincing 4-1 home win over West Ham United, with the aforementioned pairing starring in the show once again and the latter claiming a brace.

However, even with the back-to-back wins in the Premier League, there has been very little let-up from the league leaders in Liverpool, whose 2-2 draw with Manchester United at Anfield maintaining a 12-point lead over City with a game-in-hand.

Speaking to Sky Sports around the return of Premier League action for Manchester City in 2025, Bernardo Silva has ruled the reigning champions out of this season’s title race, despite there being ‘no impossibles’ in football.

“Right now, it’s about accepting the reality,” the Portugal midfielder admitted. “I’m not looking at Liverpool, I’m sixth in the league, I cannot be looking at Liverpool or Arsenal or whatever.

“I’m looking right now at the next game to try and win three points to be, if I’m sixth, to be fifth and to be fourth and to be third. And then, 10 games from the end of the season, then you can start making a little bit of math to see where you can go.”

The 30-year-old continued, “But right now, I would say not impossible because in football there are no impossibles, but right now Man City is completely out of the title race. There is no question about that.

“It’s too late for us. People always say that you can’t win the league in January, but you can lose it and this season the reality is we’ve lost it.”

There remains plenty for Manchester City to continue competing for this season, both in terms of crucial Premier League aspirations and on the silverware front, with a place in the English top-flight’s top-four a necessity to ensure European football for next season, too.

The Champions League also remains a distant target given their current showings in the competition, and City know that they must claim points in their remaining league phase outings against Paris Saint-Germain and Club Brugge to get a play-off place for the last-16.

As for the FA Cup, England’s most traditional and loved knock-out competition returns for Manchester City this weekend in a local derby, as League Two side Salford City make the short hop over to the Etihad Stadium in the third round.
