Lyon winger Malick Fofana has admitted there was interest from Chelsea in the summer, but it wasn’t concrete enough in the end.

Chelsea had a busy summer in which they made six first team signings, with five of those attackers, as the frontline underwent a major revamp.

The Blues sold Noni Madueke, Joao Felix, Nicolas Jackson, and Christopher Nkunku, and signed Alejandro Garnacho, Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens, Joao Pedro and Facundo Buonanotte,.

Malick Fofana speaks on Chelsea interest

Left wing was a key area for Chelsea to strengthen in the summer, and they ultimately settled on signing Gittens and Garnacho.

However, before that Chelsea were strongly linked with Lyon’s Fofana, although they never made an offer for the Belgian in the end, whilst Liverpool were also interested.

Lyon were thought to want around €50m for Fofana, and the Belgium international has now spoken on the interest, and explained why he didn’t join either club.

“There was interest from those two clubs, but ultimately it wasn’t concrete enough,” he told HBVL.

“I’ve thought about a transfer, but I think it’s more important now that I play a lot, and that has to happen at Lyon, because I still have progress to make.”

Fofana will once again play in Ligue 1 after Lyon’s relegation was overturned, and he’ll also play in the Europa League as he continues his development.

It wasn’t just Fofana who Chelsea were interested in, the Blues also explored a move for Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez.

Chelsea made an offer of €40m for Lopez, but that wasn’t enough to convince Barcelona, and the Spaniard also wanted to stay at the club.

The Blues still have Lopez on their radar, and could look to make a move in future transfer windows, but for now he’s very happy with the La Liga outfit.
