Jack Grealish has been left out of Manchester City’s pre-season tour squad despite returning to training last week, with the England international continuing his rehabilitation from the foot injury that ended his loan spell at Everton.

The 30-year-old was among the players who reported back to the City Football Academy ahead of the new campaign but did not travel with the squad for the club’s 11-day tour of Hong Kong and South Korea. His absence means he will continue working on his recovery in Manchester before returning to match action.

Grealish enters the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium following a difficult period that saw him fall out of favour under former manager Pep Guardiola. The arrival of Enzo Maresca has offered fresh hope of reviving his City career, although his immediate focus remains on regaining full fitness.

Speaking last week, Maresca refused to rule out Grealish playing a part in his plans for the new season.

“At the moment, he is here. He is a Manchester City player,” the Italian said. “I always said the same. In any club I join, I like to know the players that belong to the club. It’s my duty to try to coach them.”

Maresca also spoke warmly about the winger, adding: “I have a good relationship with Jack since I left. He has a big heart and he is a very good guy. Then we will see what happens.”

Grealish has not featured in a competitive match since January after suffering the injury that also ended his hopes of earning a place in England’s World Cup squad. With City beginning a new era under Maresca, the coming weeks could prove pivotal as the former Aston Villa captain looks to force his way back into contention.

City’s pre-season tour includes friendlies against Inter Milan, the K-League All Stars and Atlético Madrid, while Grealish continues his recovery away from the travelling squad.
